WORLD FASTEST WOMEN'S MILE AT 8th ANNUAL SBLI FALMOUTH MILE
Suzy Favor Hamilton Runs 4:25.27; Kevin Sullivan wins in 3:59.26

Falmouth, Mass. — In her first time racing in New England, Suzy Favor Hamilton, of Wisconsin, ran the fastest mile time in the world this year. Kevin Sullivan of Canada won the menās race in a sub 4-minute mile in a come-from-behind win. Both performances were in front of over 2,000 spectators at the SBLI Falmouth Mile at Falmouth High School on Saturday, August 10, 2002.

Favor Hamilton followed pace-setter Perry Fields through 600 meters and then the three-time Olympian took the lead, passing the 800 meter mark in 2:12. She was followed by Olympian Amy Rudolph, Mary Jayne Harrelson and Carmen Douma-Hussar. Favor Hamilton electrified the crowd with her finishing kick. She ran her last 400 meters in 66.1, finishing in 4:25.27, the fastest mile in the world this year, and the fastest mile ever, indoor or out, in New England. Jenelle Deatherage finished second in a personal best of 4:31.58 and Mary Jayne Harrelson was third in 4:32.68.

Earlier, in the men's race, Leonard Mucheru went out with pace-setter Erin Ersenkal for the first 600 meters. Mucheru was followed by Kevin Sullivan, Mike Miller and Jared Cordes. He was in the lead until Sullivan put in a finishing kick with 300 meters to go and blasted past the fading Mucheru at the start of the home strectch. Sullivanās time of 3:59.26 was followed by Mucheruās 4:.00.98. Mike Miller was third in a time of 4:01.54.

Sullivan and Favor Hamilton won $1,000 for their efforts. They each received an additional $500 for performance bonuses. Jenelle Deatherage and Leonard Mucheru each earned $500 as runners-up.
