Vasilyeva 2001's fastest woman's mile in the world; Itati, Mucheru under 4:00.

Lyudmila Vasilyeva of Russia ran the world's fastest time for the one mile run in the world in 2001 when she won the SBLI Falmouth Mile in 4:30.30. Her race, wildly cheered by the crowd of nearly 2,000 spectators that ringed the track, was also the fastest mile ever run by a woman in the New England. Vasilyeva took the lead at the 800 meter mark and powered away from the field. Running her last 400 in :68.5, Vasilyeva pulled away from 2000 champion Mary Jayne Harrelson to win by over 30 meters, knocking two full seconds off the old record run by Debbie Marshall in 1999.

The men's race could have been a thriller — Leonard Mucheru had run 3:49.7 early in June, and everyone looked forward to a great time. However, the fast race never materialized. When Mucheru came up with a small stress fracture which hindered his racing, John Itati bolted past Mucheru with 100 meters to go and held first place up the home straight. The two Kenyans both ran under four minutes.
