Falmouth "Top 10"
Published on Saturday, July 18, 2009
FALMOUTH TOP 10
(1) Don’t let anyone run with your race number. It can mess up the scoring and awards, and that makes people really unhappy. We want to make people really happy.
(2) We worry about you, so please do not start the race unless you have properly trained to run the 7 miles. Heat and humidity can do terrible things to people, and you do not want to meet our medical team up close and personal. Their ice baths are cold!
(3) Don’t start the race unless you have a realistic expectation of finishing in under an hour and a half. To be blunt, Falmouth is a run and you should not enter if you plan on walking most of the course. The finish line is officially closed at 12:30. And please, no baby strollers, skates or ear buds .
(4) If you do not drink enough water, blame yourself. We will have hydration stations en route and you should use them. Help us get rid of the huge number of Poland Springs water bottles that we have at 2 miles, 4 miles and 5.5 miles. The more you drink, the happier our medical staff will be. We will have medical people stationed along the last several miles and they will be watching for runners in trouble.
(5) Get on the busses to the start EARLY. When 10,000 runners get together it is amazing to see how long it takes for them transported to the start. Each bus holds about 50 people. The large crowd will make it hard to find a place to park, a bathroom, or a friend. The race will start exactly at 10:00 am in Woods Hole. It will start even if you are not at the start. Make sure you find your proper starting group. We make that easy, since everyone in your start group has the same color band across their number. The wheel chair race will start at 9:45 am
(6) The race provides free bus transportation to the start in Woods Hole beginning at 7:15 am. The last bus will leave about 8:45 am from the Lawrence School. Please, unless you are living on the edge, don’t wait for the last bus. The boarding point is the Lawrence School, and a bus will leave as soon as it is full. There are NO busses to take you back to your car after the race. Walking is best to soothe the aching muscles.
(7) When you cross the finish line move quickly down the finish chute towards the end. Take a left turn at the end of the chute and you will find a pot of gold. Not exactly, but you will find tables lined with bottles of Poland Spring water. Keep moving after you grabbed your drink and follow the crowd. You will find yourself on the ball field where you can get free food. You might also be able to find your friends
(8) Because you may still have questions, we have an information booth set up in the middle of the field where you can play “20 Questions.” Ask the Info Booth. They have the answers. By the way we have established a family reunion area on the basketball court to the left of the food tents. This will make it easier to find your family and friends
(9) The Post Race party begins when you get to the ball field. You will be able to get a free food, beverages, hear some great music and meet thousands of people. We will have enough for 10,000 people, but seven miles makes people extra hungry and thirsty, so eat early, but not often. The awards ceremony will begin at 12:15 right near the finish line.
Last, but far from the least, we are happy that you are with us today. We hope you have a good time during the race and expect you to have a good time after the race. We hope you will mark your calendar for 2010, August 15, 2010.
